ROBIN BINDER
Robin Binder is a visual and tattoo artist based in so-called Montreal, Canada. They explore connections between the urban and nature through an anticolonialist lens. Robin uses primarily watercolors, gouache, and ink to depict illustrations of botanicals, urban scapes, and fantastical scenes. Their recent work also features handmade watercolor paints using ethically-sourced pigments.
Robin’s background in urban planning led them to explore the effects of the colonialist capitalist system on urban spaces and those who inhabit them, and the power of art and community as resistance. They find inspiration in the stark contrast between urban life, its impact on us, our planet, and the creatures whose land we inhabit.
Robin’s approach to creating centers the collective goals of their community, firmly rooted in knowledge- and materials-sharing. Tattooing has also helped them incorporate body reclamation and trauma-informed practices into their work. They hope to expand their botanical knowledge to further their pigment-making practice, to work on larger scale pieces, and to incorporate tattooing techniques into traditional paintings.
More of Robin’s work can be found on their instagram @robinbbart and @robinbbtattoo.
